Dozmary by Don

(Note - Dozmary is a ancient pool situated in the far reaches of Bodmin Moor,Cornwall, England. It is the place that, by legend, the sword Excalibur was given to King Arthur by the Lady of the Lake and where, after Arthur's death, the sword was returned. It is not a place to be at night)

It has been there like it was forever
a silent place and in the summer sun -a brief
glance from those who pass rapidly by
who know not the unceasing grief

But to those who go at night when the clouds
race across the moon in endless succession
it shows its soul and the ageless tears
that flow at the sight of the ragged procession
For at night, it remembers a night long ago
when the ragged band came over the hill to the north
and their tears flowed fast like the stream
that carried the sad sad news forth

It was the end of their road and their dream
that had come true for a while
when the enemy ran and their cause was right
and all the gods in their heaven did smile
All was theirs for the taking - so the Lady had said
with her gift in their hands they could never fail
to win back the land from the thief from the sea
and, at the sight of the gift, whose faces did pale

Now it was over - the thief he had won every prize
by the numbers he sent to harry and slay
and the small ragged band were all that were left
with the gift that they had to repay
So they came to the place with the wind and the rain
from whence the gift did appear
and they stood on the shore and wept till at last
with one swing the gift flew aloft like a spear

But the Lady knew - she knew their sorrow
and she held out her hand as a sign to those men
she held the gift in her hand for a moment
then did it sink from their eyes till the Day comes again
So have the years passed but people still speak
of the things that that were done by that small ragged band
Others visit to laugh and refuse to believe
But they won't go at night to that dark mournful land

Go you at night and stand where they stood
with their grief their last thing to give
Tell me your shiver is just from the wind
then you will know - that Arthur did live
