"Taking
The Bitter With the Sweet"
Providing
a backyard wildlife sanctuary can have its ups and downs...bitter
and sweet. Last week we were all excited about the latest critters
that appear to be opossums, but might just be common rats.
E-mail
communiqués from one of the registered oppossum web sites
have assured me that the little creatures with white feet and pink
noses are possoms. Relief!
But,
wait. There are five of them...a mama, papa, and three little ones.
I hear that they have litter after litter. That is not good news.
However, I have been assured that generally these possom critters
move on, and will not remain in their den in my backyard.
Today,
horror of horrors...I saw a hawk kill and fly off with one of our
backyard residents...a tiny chipmunk.
The
excitement is becoming too much. What's next...an invasion of hawks
clearing my sanctuary? Happily, after all of this drama, a tiny,
beautiful blue Indigo Bunting visited one of the feeders. That's
just what I needed.
So,
if you are considering a backyard wildlife sanctuary...remember
that you cannot select the wildlife who visit.
Plant
a tree,
